The Recording Academy has officially unveiled the nominees for the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, and the Best African Music Performance category is completely dominated by Nigerian artists. This category features a strong lineup, with all the nominees hailing from Nigeria, except for one non-Nigerian entry, American artist Chris Brown. Chris Brown made the cut for his collaboration with Nigerian musicians Davido and Lojay on the track “Sensational.”
The announcement of the nominees was made on Friday, November 8, 2024. The contenders in the Best African Music Performance category are: “Tomorrow” by Yemi Alade, “MMS” by Asake featuring Wizkid, “Sensational” by Chris Brown with Davido and Lojay, “Higher” by Burna Boy, and “Love Me JeJe” by Tems.
For context, it’s worth noting that the inaugural award for Best African Music Performance was given at the 66th Grammys, with the South African singer Tyla winning for her track “Water.”
In addition to this, Nigerian superstars Rema and Tems have both earned nominations in the Best Global Music Album category. Rema’s highly anticipated sophomore album, HEIS, and Tems’ debut album, Born in the Wild, will compete for the prestigious award. They are up against other notable albums, including Alkebulan II by Matt B and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Paisajes by Ciro Hurtado, and Historias De Un Flamenco by Antonio Rey.
Furthermore, Tems has earned another nomination, this time in the Best R&B Song category, for her hit song “Burning.” In a remarkable feat, all the nominees in the Best R&B Song category this year are women. Tems will be vying for the award against strong contenders like Kehlani’s After Hours, Coco Jones’ Here We Go (Uh Oh), Muni Long’s Ruined Me, and SZA’s Saturn.
These nominations highlight the growing influence of African artists in global music, especially Nigerian musicians, who continue to shine at the Grammys.
