London Marathon 2025 Set to Break World Record for Largest Field

The 2025 London Marathon is poised to make history as the largest marathon ever recorded, with over 56,000 runners expected to cross the finish line on Sunday, April 27.

Record-Breaking Numbers

If achieved, this will surpass the current world record of 55,646 finishers, set by the New York Marathon in November. Since its inception in 1981, the London Marathon has seen over 1.3 million participants complete the legendary 26.2-mile course.

This year, the event also set a new global record for applications, with over 840,000 people entering the ballot—surpassing the previous record of 578,304 from 2024. Among UK applicants, 49% were female, and applications from 20-29-year-olds doubled, reflecting growing diversity in marathon running.

Celebrating 45 Years of the London Marathon

Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events, emphasized the event’s significance:

“The 45th edition is a landmark year for us, and it would be wonderful to mark that by becoming the biggest marathon ever staged anywhere in the world. Marathon Day is a special moment when communities unite to celebrate the very best of humanity, as thousands take on the iconic 26.2-mile challenge from Greenwich to The Mall, raising millions for charity.”

Elite Athletes Set to Compete

The 2025 London Marathon will feature some of the world’s top runners, including:

  • Eliud Kipchoge, distance-running legend, making his first London Marathon appearance since 2020.
  • Ruth Chepngetich, the women’s world record holder, competing alongside Olympic champion Sifan Hassan and silver medallist Tigst Assefa—the three fastest women in history.
  • Eilish McColgan, making her highly anticipated marathon debut.
