A South African organization known as Progressive Forces has initiated a petition aimed at preventing Chidimma Adetshina from competing in the upcoming Miss Universe 2024 pageant. This development follows Adetshina’s arrival in Mexico on Wednesday, where she is set to represent Nigeria in the global competition scheduled for November.
According to JOINTEARN, Adetshina, who was recently crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, faced significant backlash in South Africa when she was announced as a contestant in the Miss South Africa pageant. In light of the controversy surrounding her participation, the South African Department of Home Affairs (DHA) released a statement indicating that preliminary evidence had emerged suggesting that Adetshina’s mother may have committed fraud and identity theft. These serious allegations ultimately led to Adetshina withdrawing from the Miss South Africa competition and subsequently accepting an invitation to participate in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant.
In response to these troubling developments, Progressive Forces submitted their petition to the Miss Universe organizers on Wednesday. The group argues that allowing Adetshina to compete could undermine the integrity of the Miss Universe brand, given the serious allegations against her family. Their petition has gained significant traction, amassing over 1,000 signatures within just 24 hours.
In their petition, the members of Progressive Forces expressed their deep concern regarding Adetshina’s situation, particularly in light of her mother’s conviction for identity fraud. They noted that on October 29, a court order resulted in the cancellation of both Adetshina’s and her mother’s identities by the Department of Home Affairs. The group is advocating on behalf of all individuals who value justice and is urging the Miss Universe organization to reconsider Adetshina’s entry into the competition.
