Operatives from the Edo State Police Command have made significant strides in combating cult activities in the region by arresting two individuals suspected of being members of the notorious Aiye cult group. This development was confirmed by the Commissioner of Police, Umoru Ozigi, during a press briefing held in Benin City.
According to Commissioner Ozigi, the arrests occurred along the Benin/Auchi bypass in the Iguomo community, located within the Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State. The police operatives, specifically from the anti-kidnapping unit, were engaged in a stop-and-search operation when they made the breakthrough.
The operation took an interesting turn when the officers spotted a motorcycle carrying two passengers along the bypass. Upon seeing the police, the passengers attempted to flee the scene, prompting the operatives to give chase. Their swift actions led to the successful apprehension of the suspects, who have been identified as Nosakhare Umuwagbe, aged 34, and Frank Abumere, aged 35.
In a subsequent search of the suspects’ residences, law enforcement officials recovered two pump-action guns along with twelve live cartridges, further substantiating their involvement in criminal activities. Commissioner Ozigi revealed that the suspects have admitted to their affiliation with the Aiye cult group, and he confirmed that they will face charges in court following the completion of the ongoing investigation. This incident underscores the police command’s commitment to addressing cult-related violence and maintaining public safety in Edo State.
