India Post to Resume Full Services to US from October 15

New Delhi, Oct 15, 2025: India Post will resume all categories of international postal services to the United States from October 15, nearly two months after suspending shipments due to changes in US customs duties.

The Department of Posts (DoP) said services including Express Mail Service, air parcels, registered letters, and tracked packets will be restored from post offices, International Business Centres, and Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras.

From Wednesday, India Post will implement a Delivery Duty Paid (DDP) mechanism compliant with US Customs and Border Protection rules. Under the system, a flat 50% customs duty on the declared free-on-board (FOB) value will be collected in India at the time of booking and remitted directly to US customs. Shipments of letters, documents, and gifts valued up to $100 remain duty-exempt.

DoP officials said the new duty structure reduces costs for exporters, especially MSMEs, artisans, and e-commerce sellers, while keeping postage rates unchanged. US-based logistics firm Yakit has been appointed to handle duty collection and remittance, charging about $0.01 per shipment, which India Post will absorb.

The suspension, effective August 29, followed the US withdrawal of the de minimis exemption that previously allowed goods worth up to $800 to enter duty-free. Initially, India Post continued only small shipments under $100 but had to halt all mail until compliance systems were implemented.

DoP Secretary Vandita Kaul said the resumption is “a major milestone” in strengthening India’s international logistics network and supporting initiatives like Make in India and One District One Product (ODOP).
