Boluarte Faces Corruption and Abandonment Investigations
A Peruvian judge has rejected a bid to prevent former President Dina Boluarte from leaving the country while prosecutors investigate her for alleged abuse of office and money laundering.
Boluarte, removed from office on October 10, 2025, was ousted in a 122–0 congressional vote, leaving with approval ratings reportedly between 2% and 4%, amid growing public unrest.
“The request to restrict her travel is unfounded,” said Judge Fernando Valdez, citing that Boluarte does not pose a flight risk.
Allegations Against Boluarte
Boluarte faces multiple allegations:
- Abandoning her office: Prosecutors claim she left her duties for two weeks in July 2023 while undergoing rhinoplasty without notifying Congress or appointing an acting president.
- Corruption claims: Scrutiny has arisen over the origins of her luxury Rolex watches and alleged receipt of money from a criminal group.
- Excessive force: Her administration is accused of using disproportionate force during protests supporting her predecessor, Pedro Castillo, who was impeached in December 2022.
Boluarte has denied all wrongdoing.
Context of Political Turmoil in Peru
Peru has experienced extensive political instability, with seven presidents in seven years. Currently:
- Three former leaders are imprisoned.
- Over half of current congressional representatives are under investigation by state prosecutors.
Following Boluarte’s removal, crowds gathered outside the Ecuadorian embassy in Lima, amid speculation that she might seek asylum in the neighboring country.
