Beed, Maharashtra: Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) leader Prakash Ambedkar on Sunday called for an impartial and thorough investigation into the suicide of a 28-year-old woman doctor in Beed district, whose death has triggered public outrage and led to the sacking of a police official over rape allegations.
Ambedkar, during his visit to the family of the deceased doctor, emphasized that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) must conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. He stressed that the probe should include a review of all postmortem reports filed over the past year, particularly those overseen by the young doctor, to determine whether undue pressure or harassment contributed to her decision to take her life.
“If any pressure is established, the investigation must identify those responsible, whether they belong to the police, the medical community, political circles, or social networks,” Ambedkar told reporters. He also called for scrutiny of call records and communications of individuals connected to the doctor during the relevant period to uncover the “real cause” behind this tragic incident.
The doctor, who was posted at a government hospital in Satara district, was found hanging in a hotel room in Phaltan town on October 23. A suicide note reportedly written on her palm alleged repeated sexual assault by police sub-inspector Gopal Badane and mental harassment by software engineer Prashant Bankar. Both men have been arrested, and Badane has been dismissed from the police force.
Ambedkar also urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to honour his commitment to provide a government job to a member of the deceased doctor’s family. “The Chief Minister makes statements instantly, like ‘instant idli,’ but the subsequent information is contradictory. He must verify the details provided by the police,” Ambedkar remarked.
Beyond the investigation, Ambedkar expressed concern about the fragile social atmosphere in Beed, warning that political elements may be attempting to escalate tensions between the Maratha and Vanjari communities. He called on both the Governor and Chief Minister to intervene immediately to ensure peace and communal harmony in the district.
This incident has sparked widespread debate over the pressures faced by professionals, especially women in government service, and the adequacy of protections against harassment in both workplace and social settings.
