Immigration Officer Allegedly Shoots Woman in Badagry Community

Residents of Gbogbele Community in Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State, are on edge following the alleged shooting of a woman by a Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) officer during an early morning operation on Friday, November 7, 2025.

Eyewitnesses reported that immigration personnel arrived in the community in two Toyota Hilux vans and positioned themselves near a local bridge. Tensions escalated when a resident inquired about the officers’ mission and insisted that the local council chairman be notified before the operation proceeded.

Sources said the team leader of the NIS officers became agitated and ordered the arrest of the resident, identified as a former councillor, Hon. Friday Gigonu, who fled the scene. During the pursuit, one officer allegedly fired a shot that missed the intended target and struck a woman resting in her room.

A community leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the bullet pierced the wall of the woman’s home before hitting her arm. Another resident, Muyiwa, added that the tensions stemmed from a previous incident in which immigration officers allegedly seized a resident’s National Identification Number (NIN) card, prompting Hon. Gigonu’s intervention.

The victim was rushed to Badagry General Hospital, where doctors confirmed that the gunshot shattered the bone in her arm. She is currently receiving treatment.

As of filing this report, neither the Nigeria Immigration Service nor the Lagos State Police Command had issued an official statement. Attempts to reach the Public Relations Officer of the NIS, Seme Border Command, were unsuccessful.

Community leaders and human rights advocates have called for a swift and transparent investigation, warning that excessive use of force in residential areas must not go unchecked.

A local leader said, “It is unacceptable for a law enforcement officer to fire a weapon in a residential area, injuring an innocent woman in her home. This must not be swept under the carpet.”

The incident has reignited concerns over the rules of engagement and conduct of security agencies operating within civilian communities.
