DisCos meter 70,888 new customers in August — NERC

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) installed 70,888 new meters for customers across the country in August 2025.

This was contained in NERC’s Metering Factsheet for July and August 2025, released on Monday on its website.

According to the report, 70,888 customers were metered in August, compared to 76,783 in July, reflecting continued efforts to bridge Nigeria’s metering gap within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

The factsheet showed that the total number of active electricity customers across all DisCos rose from 11.89 million in July to 11.96 million in August 2025.

“Out of this figure, 6.58 million customers were metered, resulting in a metering rate of 55.01%, up slightly from 54.71% recorded in July,” the report said.

Top performing DisCos

The top-performing distribution companies during the period were Ikeja Electric (84.83%), Eko Electric (84.25%), and Abuja DisCo (73.92%), according to the Commission.

NERC noted that the improvement reflects “gradual progress in closing Nigeria’s metering gap and enhancing transparency and billing accuracy” across the power sector.

N28bn funding for new meters

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NERC recently approved ₦28 billion for DisCos to procure and install meters for unmetered Band A and Band B customers within their service areas.

The funds, approved under Tranche B of the Meter Asset Financing (MAF) scheme, are intended not only to meter all outstanding Band A customers but also to accelerate metering for Band B consumers.

NERC said the initiative is part of ongoing reforms to improve customer satisfaction, reduce estimated billing, and enhance revenue collection in the power sector.
