Ogun Retirees Appeal to Abiodun for Consequential Pension Review

Senior citizens under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Ogun State Council, have appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to approve the long-awaited consequential review of pensions, citing the pressing economic hardship facing retirees.

In a letter addressed to the Governor through the Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, and jointly signed by NUP chairman Waheed Oloyede and secretary Bola Lawal, the retirees stressed that the review would improve their purchasing power and enhance the security and dignity of pensioners in the state.

The retirees lamented that their current incomes are insufficient to meet basic needs, including essential medications for age-related health challenges. They emphasized that their appeal aligns with the 2019 Federal Government circular on Consequential Adjustments of Pensions, which mandated adjustments for retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS) following the implementation of the New National Minimum Wage Act, 2019.

The letter noted recent interventions by the Ogun State government, including the payment of accrued gratuities up to 2019 and the full implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) from July 2, 2025, ensuring retirees transitioning from the old scheme were not disadvantaged.

The retirees expressed gratitude for these steps but urged the Governor to approve the consequential review, emphasizing that it would significantly boost their financial capacity and improve their standard of living.

They also requested that retirees from tertiary institutions who voluntarily exited service but meet the 35-year service requirement or mandatory retirement age of 60, and fall under the DBS, be included in the scheme and paid accordingly.

Finally, the NUP called for continuous and transparent communication regarding the full implementation of the CPS to ensure a seamless transition for future retirees.
