Abia Youths Empowered with Vocational Skills Through MAI Foundation Project

The MAI Foundation for Women Empowerment and Advocacy, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, has launched the Imu Oru Upskilling Project, a one-year initiative aimed at empowering 120 youths in Abia State with practical skills in carpentry, tailoring, and shoemaking.

The program integrates the Igba Boi (Igbo Apprenticeship System), a traditional socio-economic model where a master (Oga) mentors an apprentice, imparting both trade expertise and business knowledge over a defined period.

Practical Skills and Entrepreneurship

Founder of MAI Foundation, Chika Ezinma Obidike, emphasized that the apprenticeship model offers an immersive, hands-on learning experience that equips participants with real-world skills and entrepreneurial confidence.

“The Imu Oru Upskilling Project goes beyond vocational training; it is designed to strengthen local economies, build resilient communities, and promote gender equality and socio-economic empowerment,” Obidike said.

Research shows that beneficiaries of vocational programs in Nigeria can earn up to 30% more than unskilled peers, with over 60% going on to train others, multiplying the initiative’s impact across communities.

Upon completion, each participant will receive starter kits and business resources to establish and grow their ventures, creating a ripple effect of opportunity and innovation across Abia State.

Holistic Development Approach

Project Manager Amanda Obidike highlighted that participants will also receive training in soft skills, business development, and financial literacy, ensuring they are fully equipped to manage and sustain their enterprises.

“This initiative reflects the shared vision of MAI Foundation and Mastercard Foundation to bridge critical skills gaps, empower young people, and drive inclusive socio-economic development,” she said.

The Imu Oru Upskilling Project stands as a strategic model for combining traditional apprenticeship systems with modern entrepreneurship training, paving the way for a generation of skilled, self-reliant youths in Abia State.
