Cristiano Ronaldo Confirms 2026 World Cup Will Be His Final Major Tournament

Cristiano Ronaldo, the legendary Portuguese forward, has officially confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will be his last major international tournament. The 40-year-old striker, who has scored over 950 career goals for club and country, shared insights into his retirement plans during a recent interview.

Ronaldo Hints at Retirement Timeline

Ronaldo, who extended his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr until 2027, stated that he plans to retire in “one or two years” to spend more time with his family.

“I feel very good at this moment. I score goals, I still feel quick and sharp. I’m enjoying my game in the national team,” Ronaldo said via video call at a Saudi-hosted global summit on tourism and investment.

The veteran forward added humor to his timeline: “Soon for me means in 10 years … No, I’m joking.” He emphasized that while he is still performing at a high level, the 2026 World Cup will mark the final chapter of his illustrious international career.

Ronaldo’s 2026 World Cup: A Farewell to International Football

With Portugal close to qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, Ronaldo confirmed the tournament will be his swansong on football’s biggest stage.

“Definitely, yes, because I will be 41 years old,” he said, highlighting his remarkable longevity and fitness. Ronaldo is also the top scorer in international football history, with 143 goals for Portugal, cementing his status as one of the sport’s greatest ever players.

“I gave everything for football. I’ve been in the game for the last 25 years. I did everything. I have many records in the different scenarios in the clubs and also in the national teams,” he added.

Legacy and Family

Ronaldo also reflected on his legacy and his son, Cristiano dos Santos Jr., who is following in his father’s footsteps with the Portugal Under-16 national team.

“As human beings, we always don’t want anybody being better than us. But I wish my kids will be better than me. I’m never going to be jealous of him,” Ronaldo said.

He emphasized that he wants his son to enjoy his own path, free from the pressure of living up to Ronaldo’s legacy:

“I don’t want to add pressure to that, because what I want for him is to be happy. It doesn’t matter if you want to play football or play another sport. Be happy, be free.”

Ronaldo expressed pride in his achievements but also highlighted the importance of supporting the next generation.

Ronaldo’s Enduring Impact

As one of football’s most iconic figures, Ronaldo’s records, achievements, and influence extend across both club and international football. From his debut with Sporting Lisbon in 2002 to decades of success with Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Al-Nassr, Ronaldo has consistently delivered world-class performances.

His announcement of retirement after the 2026 World Cup marks the conclusion of an era for Portugal and global football, while his legacy will inspire future generations.
