Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and current President of the Port Management Association of West & Central Africa (PMAWCA), has called on maritime operators and regulators across West and Central Africa to prioritize the Blue Economy as a strategy to boost job creation and strengthen economic resilience.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 45th Annual Council of PMAWCA, Dantsoho highlighted that the resolutions from the week-long meeting will shape policy formulation, guide government action, and support financial stability across member states.
“This convergence of West and Central African talent to generate ideas for optimizing opportunities inherent in our maritime and demographic endowments will not only guide policy formulation but embolden government action,” Dantsoho said.
Regional Cooperation Key to Progress
Dantsoho emphasized the interconnectedness of African nations and urged stakeholders in the maritime sector to collaborate for the collective advancement of their economies and seaports. He commended the unity of purpose demonstrated by Directors-General and CEOs of member ports, describing their contributions as “remarkable.”
Represented at the ceremony by Mr. Ikechukwu Onyemekara, General Manager of Corporate Affairs and Communication at NPA, Dantsoho praised the enthusiasm, goodwill, and altruism displayed during technical sessions. He concluded that ports within the sub-region are well-positioned to confront future challenges with confidence and renewed hope.
“I have always looked forward to a time when the African community collaborates in good faith for the greater good of our continent,” he said.
Maximizing Maritime Potential
Highlighting Africa’s geographical and economic realities, Dantsoho stressed the importance of integration and cooperation, particularly in light of the rapidly evolving global maritime environment. He called on delegates and experts to sustain momentum in collaborative efforts, invoking the words of Henry Ford:
“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”
Dantsoho also expressed gratitude to the government and people of the Republic of Congo for hosting the council and commended the Secretary-General of PMAWCA, Mr. Koffi Jean Marie, along with the Port of Pointe-Noire team and partners for excellent coordination.
Through a focus on the Blue Economy, Dr. Dantsoho believes Africa can harness its maritime and demographic resources to generate jobs, enhance trade, and drive sustainable economic growth across the continent.
