New CCTV footage has revealed that the white Hyundai i20 which exploded near Delhi’s Red Fort on Monday evening was seen travelling in Haryana’s Faridabad on October 29—the same day the vehicle was purchased. According to Delhi Police, the footage shows three occupants inside the car, strengthening suspicions about pre-planned movement linked to the subsequent blast that killed 13 people and injured 21.
The video, recorded near what appears to be a pollution control check centre, shows two men entering the vehicle separately around 4:20 pm, after which the car drives off with two occupants in the front and one in the rear seat. Investigators believe this footage is a key part of reconstructing the vehicle’s movements ahead of the attack.
The car has been traced to Dr. Umar Un Nabi, a Pulwama-based doctor suspected of involvement with a terror module connected to a massive explosives recovery in Faridabad. Investigators from Delhi Police’s Special Cell told HT that preliminary evidence indicates Dr. Umar may have been driving the i20 when it detonated near the Lal Quila Metro Station.
Unfolding Route Across Delhi
Multiple agencies have gathered CCTV inputs and highway logs to piece together the vehicle’s route on the day of the blast:
8:04 am: The Hyundai i20 entered Delhi from the Badarpur toll booth while crossing over from Faridabad.
Throughout the day, the car was sighted in several locations across central and old Delhi, including Darya Ganj, Kashmere Gate, and the Sunehri Masjid area.
4:00 pm: The car exited Daryaganj Market and moved toward the Sunehri Masjid parking lot adjacent to the Red Fort.
4:00 pm – 6:00 pm: The vehicle remained parked in the Sunehri Masjid parking area for nearly two hours.
6:45 pm: The car left the parking lot, drove toward Old Delhi Railway Station, took a U-turn, and proceeded along the Chhata Rail Chowk stretch.
In its final movements, the vehicle headed toward Lower Subhash Marg, passing Jama Masjid and Jain Mandir, before approaching Lal Quila Metro Gate 1.
6:52 pm: As the car slowed at a traffic signal near the Red Fort Metro Station, the explosion occurred, destroying the vehicle, killing all three occupants, and damaging nearby vehicles.
Terror Angles Under Probe
With the blast’s origin still undetermined, Delhi Police have invoked stringent legal provisions, including:
- UAPA Sections 16 and 18, related to acts of terrorism and conspiracy
- Sections 3 and 4 of the Explosive Substances Act
- IPC sections on murder and attempt to murder
In a parallel development, J&K Police detained six individuals during overnight raids in Pulwama, including three relatives of Dr. Umar. Investigators say Dr. Umar is a central link between the Red Fort blast and the previously busted Faridabad terror module, which yielded 2,900 kg of explosives. He has been untraceable since that investigation intensified.
The emerging timeline, coupled with CCTV evidence, is helping agencies build a clearer picture of the events surrounding the Red Fort blast as the NIA leads the formal investigation.
