ASUU Fumes Over FG’s Selective Implementation of Agreements, Issues Warning

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed deep concern over what it described as the Federal Government’s selective implementation of agreements with the union.

The warning came in a statement signed by ASUU President Professor Christopher Piwuna following the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at Taraba State University, Jalingo.

“We hope that our expectations, and indeed the expectations of Nigerians, for a quick and holistic resolution are not dashed,” the union said, cautioning that continued indecision by the government could have serious consequences for the education sector.

ASUU further stressed that if the Federal Government fails to honor its agreements, it may trigger another nationwide industrial action.

The union criticized government officials for allegedly undermining the negotiation process through misrepresentation and partial measures.

“The partial payment of promotion arrears, dating back to 2017, and the release of third-party deductions were described as confidence-boosting exercises rather than solutions to the core issues,” ASUU stated.

While some non-monetary aspects of the agreement have reportedly progressed, ASUU maintained that salary issues and conditions of service remain unresolved, underscoring ongoing tension between university lecturers and the government.
