What to Expect From the Michael Jackson Biopic

According to the official synopsis, Michael promises “a riveting and honest portrayal of the brilliant yet complicated man who became the King of Pop.” The film aims to highlight both Michael’s triumphs and personal struggles, featuring his most iconic performances while exploring his life behind the stage.

While the movie celebrates his artistry, it is currently unclear whether it will address the controversies that surrounded Michael later in life, including allegations featured in the 2019 documentary Leaving Neverland.

The teaser trailer, released in November 2025, gives a glimpse of Jaafar performing the moonwalk and reenacting Michael’s legendary choreography from hits like Thriller. Fans also see the young Jackson in recording sessions, providing an intimate look at the beginning of his remarkable career.

Director, Writer, and Production Team

Michael is directed by Antoine Fuqua, known for films such as The Equalizer trilogy, Southpaw, and Emancipation, as well as acclaimed documentaries like What’s My Name: Muhammad Ali and Legacy: The True Story of the LA Lakers.

“Combining film and music has always been part of who I am,” Fuqua said. “There is no artist with the power, charisma, and sheer musical genius of Michael Jackson. His work has influenced my entire career, and telling his story on screen alongside his music was irresistible.”

The script is written by Oscar nominee and Tony winner John Logan, with Graham King, John Branca, and John McClain producing. The involvement of Michael Jackson’s estate ensures the film’s authenticity and family endorsement.

Jackson Family Endorsement

The biopic has received strong support from Michael Jackson’s family. His mother, Katherine Jackson, expressed her approval of Jaafar’s casting, saying he “embodies” her son and is carrying forward the Jackson family legacy.

“It’s wonderful to see him continue the legacy of entertainers and performers,” she told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023.
