Aligarh School Teacher Suspended for Objecting to Singing of Vande Mataram

In a recent incident that has sparked debate over school protocols and patriotism, an assistant teacher in Aligarh district was suspended for allegedly refusing to participate in the singing of the National Anthem and Vande Mataram during the morning assembly at a government school.

The episode occurred at Shahpur Qutub Upper Primary School, where assistant teacher Samshul Hasan reportedly refused to join in the recitation of these national symbols. Hasan not only abstained from singing but also raised objections to the practice, which was perceived by the school authorities as an act of indiscipline and disrespect. The incident caused a stir among staff and students, raising questions about adherence to national practices in educational institutions.

The Basic Education Officer (BSA) of Aligarh, Rakesh Kumar Singh, took swift action by suspending Hasan. He stated that the teacher’s behaviour was unbecoming of a government employee and violated the professional code of conduct expected of educators. “Such acts not only breach professional ethics but also send a wrong message to students,” Singh remarked. He added that a formal inquiry had been initiated and the Block Education Officer was directed to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. Based on the findings, further disciplinary action will be considered.

The Aligarh education department has also issued a circular to all schools in the district, emphasizing the importance of active participation in the singing of the National Anthem and Vande Mataram during morning assemblies. The department noted that these practices are crucial for instilling a sense of respect, unity, and patriotism among students.

Local authorities have been alerted to the incident, which has sparked wider discussions on decorum and the expression of national pride within schools. The suspension reflects the administration’s effort to maintain protocol and ensure that educators set an example for their students.

The inquiry is ongoing, and the final outcome will determine whether additional measures will be taken against the teacher or if reinstatement will be considered under specific conditions. Meanwhile, the incident has reignited debates on balancing personal beliefs with professional responsibilities in educational settings.
