The beloved — and occasionally terrifying — Gremlins are making a comeback. Warner Bros. officially announced that the franchise’s third installment is scheduled for release on November 19, 2027, more than 40 years after audiences first met the mischievous creatures in the 1984 classic.
Chris Columbus Returns to Helm the New Gremlins Movie
The original Gremlins screenwriter, Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Harry Potter), is returning to the franchise to direct the highly anticipated sequel. Columbus first rose to fame with the original 1984 hit, which introduced viewers to the lovable yet dangerous Mogwai named Gizmo, owned by lead character Billy Peltzer (played by Zach Galligan).
Columbus expressed his excitement in a statement:
“I’m filled with a tremendous surge of inspiration and passion as I embark on this cinematic journey. It’s an honor to reunite with Steven Spielberg and Warner Bros., as we bring this latest chapter of Gremlins to a brand new generation of moviegoers who will experience all of the thrills of this grand adventure on the big screen.”
While Columbus did not write the 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, he is now fully returning to guide the franchise into its next chapter.
Spielberg and New Creative Team Join the Project
Steven Spielberg, who executive produced the original films, is returning as an executive producer for the 2027 sequel. The film will also be co-produced by Kristen Macosko Krieger, Holly Bario, Michael Barnathan, and Mark Radcliffe, ensuring a blend of experience and fresh perspectives for the next generation of fans.
Joining Columbus are filmmakers Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, known for their recent work on the horror hit Final Destination: Bloodlines. Warner Bros. president of development and production, Jesse Ehrman, said:
“Few titles are as beloved and iconic as Gremlins, and we’re beyond excited to bring it back for both lifelong fans and a whole new generation. It’s a privilege to be working alongside Steven, Chris, and the entire creative team, and we look forward to audiences experiencing the next installment of the magic, mayhem, and heart of Gremlins on the big screen in 2027.”
Anticipation Builds as Fans Await Details
No casting announcements have been made yet, leaving fans eager to see which actors will join Zach Galligan and the mischievous creatures. The original films combined horror, comedy, and family-friendly storytelling, a formula that has made Gremlins a cult classic for decades.
Columbus’ return signals a commitment to honoring the spirit of the original while introducing new thrills, laughs, and chaos to modern audiences. The combination of Spielberg’s production experience and Columbus’ direction promises a faithful yet fresh take on the beloved franchise.
With a scheduled release in November 2027, the new Gremlins movie is set to bring the creatures back to theaters just in time for holiday audiences, reigniting the magic and mischief that has kept the franchise alive for over four decades.
