Ex-Ogun Commissioner Urges Youths to Embrace Agriculture

Samson Odedina, former Commissioner for Agriculture in Ogun State, has called on Nigerian youths to see agriculture as a viable livelihood and a key driver of national development.

Speaking in Akure, Ondo State, Odedina highlighted agriculture’s potential to tackle unemployment, food insecurity, and foreign exchange challenges. He emphasized that with the right support and innovative approaches, young people can transform the sector and generate sustainable wealth.

Drawing from his personal experience, Odedina explained that he became a successful private farmer before his public service roles, including as Rector of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic and later Commissioner for Agriculture. He invested in farmland in Abeokuta, Ogun State, using personal funds and focused on productivity rather than location, partnering with local landowners to develop thriving crops and livestock.

“My experience in private farming prepared me for public service. I never sought or received government land for personal use; instead, I focused on my duties,” he noted.

He urged youths to view agriculture as a profitable and dignified profession capable of transforming lives and the Nigerian economy.
