Ekiti Governor Oyebanji Imposes N5 Million Signage Fee on Political Parties Ahead of 2026 Election

Ahead of the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Oyebanji has approved a mandatory N5 million signage fee for political parties and their candidates wishing to display campaign posters, branding materials, and jingles in designated areas across the state.

The directive was issued by the Director General of the Ekiti State Signage and Advertisement Agency (EKSAA), Adebisi Adesua, and applies to every political party participating in the upcoming election.

In a letter dated November 12 and addressed to the Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Ekiti State Chapter, the agency outlined the payment requirements and restrictions. The letter, titled “Signage Regulations for Political Parties in the State: Fees and Restrictions”, was obtained by SaharaReporters on Friday.

According to EKSAA, political parties must pay the N5 million fee before displaying any form of signage. Failure to comply will attract sanctions under Section 30, Subsections 1–4 of the EKSAA Law of 2007.

The restrictions also prohibit parties from pasting campaign posters on certain public structures, including government buildings, the state secretariat, public schools, and bridge piers.

The agency instructed political parties to make payments via cheque or bank draft to its Polaris Bank account.

Part of the letter reads:

“As the 2026 election approaches in the state, all governorship aspirants of political parties are expected to pay the sum of five million naira as signage fees to cover the costs associated with the display of posters, branding, jingles, etc., in designated areas within the state.

“It is important to note that payment must be made prior to any form of display; the fee applies to all political parties in the state; and failure to pay contravenes Section 30, Subsection 1–4 of the agency law 2007 and may attract punitive measures.”

The agency further reminded political parties of restrictions against defacing public infrastructure, reiterating that posters must not be placed on government establishment buildings, the State Secretariat, public schools, or bridge pillars.

“You are therefore enjoined to assist the agency in ensuring strict compliance by political parties regarding the payment of their signage and advertisement fee,” the letter added.
