Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has made a single change to his starting XV ahead of Sunday’s Autumn Nations Series clash with Argentina at Murrayfield, with Rory Darge coming in at openside flanker to replace Matt Fagerson.
The change sees Darcy Graham set to earn his 50th cap for Scotland, marking a significant milestone in his international career. Fagerson, meanwhile, will drop to the bench following last weekend’s defeat to New Zealand, allowing for continuity in the back row alongside Darge.
Key Players Return as Scotland Aim to Bounce Back
Talismanic fly-half Finn Russell has been cleared to play after being substituted in the closing stages against the All Blacks due to minor knee and ankle concerns. Townsend has opted for consistency in his line-up, keeping Kyle Steyn on the wing alongside Graham instead of Duhan van der Merwe, ensuring stability in Scotland’s attacking options.
Scotland’s joint-record try scorer, van der Merwe, will start on the bench, despite having scored two tries in the opening Autumn Series victory over the United States. Graham, who shares that record, has fond memories of facing Argentina, having scored three tries in Scotland’s 52-29 win in 2022.
Townsend praised Graham’s resilience and development:
“He’s had a few injuries, and to get to 50 caps and be a joint top try-scorer in our history is saying something for his ability when he gets those opportunities but also how he’s responded to injuries. He’s really improved his game too. When he first came through, he was very difficult to defend because of his footwork and his strength, but he’s added so much more to his game.”
Graham also made an appearance for the British & Irish Lions as a late call-up during their 2025 summer tour of Australia, further underlining his quality and experience at the highest level.
Argentina: A Formidable Challenge
Argentina arrive at Murrayfield buoyed by a 52-28 victory over Wales last weekend and are considered one of the in-form teams in world rugby. Townsend highlighted the threat posed by the Pumas:
“They are a top team. They’ve beaten New Zealand this year. They’ve played 10 or 11 Test matches since the summer and shown their quality throughout that period. Even in the recent games, they pushed South Africa close at Twickenham. They had a record win last week against Wales, so they’re full of confidence and very cohesive. They play a brand of rugby that’s enjoyable to watch, which will test our defence. They certainly seem one of the form teams in rugby right now.”
Scotland will need to bring their best performance to overcome a team that has shown consistency and high skill levels throughout 2025.
