Reasons for Declining Democracy in Nigeria Revealed

Akin Osuntokun, former Director-General of the Labour Party’s Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Council, has attributed Nigeria’s declining democracy to contradictory court rulings and internal political conflicts within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking in an interview on Arise Television, Osuntokun warned that these issues threaten democratic stability and could push the country toward a one-party dictatorship.

Key Points:

  • The PDP continues with its disputed national convention in Ibadan despite restraining court orders, factional disputes, and ongoing legal battles.
  • Osuntokun highlighted that the judiciary’s issuance of conflicting rulings undermines political stability.
  • He stressed that judges hold a responsibility to consider the broader societal impact of their decisions, noting that contradictory rulings harm democratic processes.
  • According to him, the judicial system risks becoming mechanical or insensitive, with some judges issuing errant decisions that weaken governance and political stability.

Osuntokun’s remarks underscore the need for both political unity within parties and judicial consistency to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
