Adedoyin Kukoyi is a woman of many talents—master of ceremonies, entrepreneur, actress, filmmaker, and founder of the Pregnant Care Foundation. A trained broadcaster, Kukoyi revealed she might have become a lawyer if not for an early setback in her academic journey.
“I could have gone into sciences, but I still couldn’t because I had an F9 in the biological practical. If not for broadcasting or acting, I probably would be a lawyer,” she said.
Kukoyi became widely known as the host of Gbajumo Osere, a TV show on Africa Magic that has aired for over a decade. She recounted how the show came about:
“The producer was a friend who had a programme concept. She asked who would host it, and I volunteered. It was a strict 30-minute Yoruba-speaking slot, and I saw it as a challenge. That’s how it all started.”
Reflecting on her 30-year journey in Nollywood, Kukoyi highlighted the importance of persistence, consistency, and passion.
“You get better in the industry by being consistent and persistent. You’d definitely fall, but it’s not the number of times you fall that matters—it’s how you stand and move on.”
Kukoyi recently produced her first full-length movie, ‘Flip’, which she described as a story about family, contentment, and the value of relationships over money.
“A lot is going on out there, and we often neglect what we should be passionate about. Regardless of what we do, family comes for us. Contentment also plays a vital role in a family,” she said.
On the evolution of Nollywood, Kukoyi praised platforms like YouTube for providing broader access to content, especially for viewers in the diaspora. She also encouraged investors to support filmmakers, citing examples of industry leaders whose success is backed by funding.
Kukoyi’s advice to her younger self was simple yet powerful:
“If you think it, do it. Consistency will make you get better. My parents always supported whatever I wanted to do, and that foundation helped me navigate this career.”
With several projects lined up and a continued passion for storytelling, Kukoyi’s journey underscores how determination, adaptability, and family values can shape a fulfilling career in Nollywood.
