Jannik Sinner Beats Ben Shelton at ATP Finals as Felix Auger-Aliassime Reaches Semifinals

Turin, Italy – Italian star Jannik Sinner maintained his unbeaten indoor hardcourt streak with a straight-sets win over American Ben Shelton at the ATP Finals, while Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime secured the final semifinal spot with a dramatic victory over two-time champion Alexander Zverev.

The results set up Sinner vs. Alex de Minaur and Auger-Aliassime vs. world number one Carlos Alcaraz in Saturday’s semifinals at the Palasport Olimpico.

Auger-Aliassime Clinches Semifinal Spot

Auger-Aliassime defeated Zverev 6-4, 7-6(4) in the round-robin stage to advance to the final four. Both players had previously beaten Shelton and lost to Sinner, making their match a decisive battle for the Bjorn Borg Group runner-up spot.

“I want to be in the final, but I know I’ll have to face a great player,” Auger-Aliassime said. “I’ll take my chance if it comes.”

Zverev struggled to convert seven break points against Sinner, and the story repeated itself against the Canadian. Auger-Aliassime saved multiple break points in the first set, then broke Zverev’s serve at 5-4 to claim the set.

In the second-set tiebreak, Auger-Aliassime recovered from a 2-0 deficit and earned consecutive minibreaks to close out the match, ending Zverev’s campaign in Turin.

Sinner Extends Indoor Hardcourt Unbeaten Run

Sinner remained undefeated in 29 indoor hardcourt matches after a 6-3, 7-6(3) win over Shelton in a dead rubber round-robin game. The Italian had already secured top spot in the group, ensuring a semifinal against Alex de Minaur.

Shelton managed to make the second set more competitive, saving a match point at 5-4 and forcing Sinner into a tiebreak. However, Sinner’s precise serving and timely aces sealed the victory.

Although Sinner’s bid to finish 2025 as world number one ended when Alcaraz swept the Jimmy Connors Group, the Italian can still defend his ATP Finals title, which he won last year.

Alcaraz Celebrated as Year-End World Number One

Earlier on Friday, Carlos Alcaraz was presented with the ATP year-end number one trophy on court. Alcaraz expressed pride in his achievement:

“It’s a pleasure being the number one in the world. It’s a goal I’ve been working hard for every day. This means a lot to me, and I’m really proud and happy.”

The 2025 ATP Finals final may see a rematch between Sinner and Alcaraz on Sunday, depending on the outcome of the semifinals.
