The Nigerian Army High Command has dismissed reports circulating online that a Brigade Commander was kidnapped during a terrorist ambush along Damboa Road in Borno State.
In a statement issued on Saturday by Lt.-Col. Apollonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, the Army described the reports as “fake news” and urged the public to disregard them entirely.
The statement clarified that on Friday night, troops of the 25 Task Force Brigade, while conducting a routine patrol around Wajiroko in Azi Multe, Damboa Local Government Area, came under heavy insurgent fire as they returned from a successful operation near the fringes of the Sambisa Forest.
The patrol, led by Brigadier General M. Uba, comprised members of the 25 Task Force Brigade and the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF). According to the Army, the troops engaged the insurgents with superior firepower, forcing them to withdraw in disarray and abandon their mission.
The encounter, however, came at a cost. Two soldiers and two CJTF members were killed while performing their duties. The Army commended their courage and described their sacrifice as heroic.
The statement read in part:
“The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, salutes the uncommon bravery, resilience, and sacrifice of the gallant troops who have continued to operate in one of the most dangerous theatres of conflict on behalf of our dear nation. Their unflinching commitment, even in the face of grave danger, remains a powerful reminder of the daily sacrifices being made to keep Nigeria safe.”
The Army extended condolences to the families and associates of the fallen soldiers and CJTF members, honouring their dedication to protecting communities in Borno State.
