Troops of the 25 Task Force Brigade successfully thwarted a terrorist ambush around Wajiroko in Azir-Multe, Damboa LGA, Borno State, while returning from a routine patrol near the Sambisa Forest, the Nigerian Army has confirmed.
In a statement on Saturday, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, said the patrol, led by Brigadier General M. Uba and reinforced by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), came under sudden heavy fire.
The troops fought through the ambush with superior firepower, forcing the insurgents to retreat in disarray. Unfortunately, two soldiers and two CJTF members were killed in the encounter.
Lt.-Col. Anele described the fallen personnel as heroes who died in active service, adding that the Nigerian Army had commiserated with their families.
The Army also debunked online reports claiming the Brigade Commander was kidnapped, calling them “fake news” and urging the public to disregard such claims.
“The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, praised the courage and resilience of the troops. Their unwavering commitment in one of the country’s toughest theatres of operation remains a testament to the sacrifices made daily to keep Nigeria safe,” the statement added.
