The Federal Government has officially launched the Innovation Development and Effectiveness in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative to address youth unemployment across Nigeria.
The launch, held at the Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC), Orozo, FCT, marks the start of technical and vocational training for 3,000 youths in the Abuja zone over six months. Trainees will receive stipends and starter packs upon completion.
IDEAS TVET aims to equip youths with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship, aligning with broader reforms in the technical education sector, including upgrading former science and technical colleges into full-fledged technical institutions.
Monitoring and sustainability measures are in place. According to Blessing Ogwu, National Project Coordinator, officers have been designated across all 774 local government areas to track progress. Independent third-party monitors will also report directly to the Honourable Minister of Education.
Dr. Bright Omezuike, Chairman of the Training Service Providers (TSPs) Committee, noted that 20 training providers participated in the initial phase. He described the launch as a promising start, emphasizing engagement and interest from participants.
Omale Frank, Director and Principal of FSTC Orozo, called the launch a historic milestone, describing IDEAS TVET as a blueprint to bridge learning and livelihood. He urged youths to seize the opportunity to innovate, learn, and create value.
The initiative, supported through a World Bank-financed credit, aims to enhance skills acquisition in Nigeria, ensure better alignment with labor market needs, and encourage private sector participation in formal training programs.
