Teams from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) and the National Security Guards (NSG) bomb disposal squad visited the Nowgam police station blast site in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday to collect samples and investigate the cause of the explosion that killed nine people and injured several others on Friday.
Authorities have sealed the police station and adjoining areas to preserve evidence and facilitate the probe. CFSL teams from Delhi and Chandigarh, along with the NSG bomb disposal squad, inspected the site, collected samples from the rubble, and interacted with local officials.
The blast occurred during the sampling of around 360 kg of explosives, recovered from Faridabad as part of a larger seizure of 3,000 kg, including ammonium nitrate, linked to a JeM-led “white-collar terror module.” The accidental explosion damaged several cars, police vehicles, and nearby residential houses, and was heard across a large part of Srinagar.
Among the nine deceased were a Special Investigation Team (SIT) officer of the J&K Police, three FSL personnel, two crime scene photographers, two revenue officials from the magistrate’s team, and a tailor associated with the operation.
The Union Territory administration has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha clarified that there is no evidence of a terror angle, stating, “The Nowgam police station incident was just an unfortunate accident. There is no terror conspiracy or outside involvement in this.” He praised the J&K Police for their efforts in dismantling a pan-India terror module and preventing several potential attacks.
