Turaki Emerges PDP National Chairman Amid Controversy

Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, has been elected the new National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the party’s National Convention held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan, Oyo State. The convention, however, was far from smooth, unfolding amid legal disputes, internal tensions, and high-stakes political maneuvering.

A Convention Under Pressure

The convention faced two court rulings attempting to halt it, yet party leaders insisted on proceeding, signaling PDP’s determination to assert control over its future. Delegates saw the ability to gather, vote, and deliberate as a demonstration of the party’s resilience after years of internal turbulence.

Despite the energy and excitement in the stadium, tensions were evident. Delegates expressed frustration at the absence of senior leaders, including Governors Adeleke (Osun) and Kefas (Taraba), tearing down their posters in protest.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, hosting the event, welcomed participants warmly, emphasizing the convention as a turning point for the party. He encouraged delegates not only to engage politically but also to enjoy Ibadan’s local cuisine, reflecting a mix of seriousness and levity in his address.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa reminded attendees of the PDP’s role in national rescue, stressing that the party must remain true to its democratic ideals and rebuild its credibility. Similarly, Senator Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, praised the resilience of delegates and called for unity and disciplined leadership.

Turaki: A Bridge Builder

Turaki’s election with 1,516 votes out of 2,745 accredited delegates was largely uncontested, aided by the withdrawal of several aspirants and his reputation as a neutral, consensus candidate. He is viewed as a stabilizing figure capable of reconciling party factions, rebuilding structures, and steering the PDP toward the 2027 elections.

The convention also formally ratified Umar Damagum as substantive National Chairman before voting, clearing administrative ambiguities and ensuring a smooth transition. Other party positions, including Solarin Adekunle as Deputy National Organising Secretary, were announced with broad approval.

A Mandate for Reconstruction

In his acceptance speech, Turaki declared the “era of impunity” within the PDP over, pledging internal discipline and a return of the party to its grassroots members. He acknowledged the enormity of his responsibilities, stressing that the new leadership would prioritize reconciliation, structural rebuilding, and preparation for national elections.

South-West PDP leaders credited Governor Makinde for rescuing the party from internal collapse, likening his efforts to a “biblical Moses” guiding the party through turbulent times. Former presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim urged inclusion, reconciliation, and a return to the PDP’s foundational principles, warning that Nigeria’s democracy depends on the party’s revival.

Looking Ahead

The convention also dissolved party structures in Imo, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Abia, and Rivers, creating an opportunity for restructuring and strengthening grassroots participation. Turaki’s leadership marks a strategic vote for stability, unity, and credible opposition, signaling a new chapter for the PDP as it seeks to regain public trust and political relevance ahead of the 2027 elections.
