The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 15 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining, seizing eight trucks loaded with solid minerals in the process.
Commandant Saidi Akintayo described the operation as a significant step in combating economic sabotage and protecting Edo State’s natural resources.
He explained that the suspects were apprehended following intelligence-driven operations conducted on November 15 and 16. During the raids, six trucks allegedly carrying illegally mined Kyline clay were intercepted along the Benin–Sapele Road.
“The drivers and their assistants failed to provide valid documents, which led to the arrest of nine suspects during the operations,” Akintayo said.
The suspects include Tobilola Moses, Laseisi Adesegun, Olayinka Dimeji, Joshua Ojo, Peter Oliga, Owolabi Gabriel, Solomon Shedrach, Adela Tannimawo, and Ibrahim Habib.
Akintayo emphasized that illegal mining is a serious economic crime, causing revenue loss, environmental damage, and heightened insecurity in the state.
All suspects and seized vehicles have been moved to the NSCDC exhibit yard for a thorough investigation prior to prosecution.
