In a major announcement for India’s postal and logistics sector, Union Minister for Communications and Development of North-East Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya M. Scindia said that India Post will introduce guarantee-based 24-hour and 48-hour Speed Post services starting January 2026. The new services aim to redefine speed and reliability in the nation’s postal network, ensuring faster delivery for mail and parcels across India.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Scindia highlighted that the 24-hour Speed Post service will guarantee mail delivery within a day, while the 48-hour service will ensure delivery within two days. He emphasized that this initiative is part of India Post’s broader effort to modernize its services and provide fast, reliable, and digitally enabled postal solutions to customers.

“There will be a 24-hour Speed Post service ensuring mail delivery within 24 hours, and a 48-hour Speed Post for delivery within 48 hours… By doing this, we are redefining the meaning of speed post,” Scindia said.

Introduction of Eight New Products Across Postal Services

The minister also announced that India Post will roll out eight new products across its mail, parcel, and international verticals next year. These products include:

  • Next-day parcel delivery,
  • Parcel last-mile services,
  • End-to-end parcel solutions,
  • New tracked international services,
    among other enhancements.

These offerings are aimed at enhancing customer convenience, improving tracking capabilities, and strengthening India Post’s role as a modern logistics provider, complementing its traditional mail services.

Telecom Achievements and Digital Advancements

Highlighting the performance of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Scindia noted that India had improved its ranking in the Network Readiness Index 2024 to 49th, up from 60th in the previous year. India has also entered the Tier-1 category in the Global Cybersecurity Index, with a score of 98.49 out of 100.

He pointed out India’s increasing influence in global telecom governance, citing leadership roles in international forums and events such as the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2025, inaugurated earlier this month by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The ninth edition of IMC, themed “Innovate to Transform,” focused on 6G technology, semiconductors, optical communications, quantum technologies, and cyber fraud prevention.

BSNL Turnaround and Indigenous Telecom Technology

Scindia noted the turnaround of public-sector telecom firm Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), which posted quarterly profits for the first time in 18 years. BSNL recorded ₹262 crore in Q3 and ₹280 crore in Q4 of FY 2024-25 following deep restructuring.

He also highlighted India’s achievement as the fifth country to develop its own 4G stack, a move that positions the nation to export indigenous telecom technology, strengthening its global technology footprint.

Digital Safety Initiatives

The minister spoke about measures to strengthen digital security and consumer protection in telecommunications. Key achievements include:

  • Sanchar Saathi platform: 20 crore visits, helped recover 6 lakh lost phones, and enabled disconnection of 82 lakh forged connections.
  • International Spoofed Calls Prevention System: Blocked 1.35 crore fraudulent calls within 24 hours of launch.
  • Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI): Flagged 3.5 lakh mobile numbers and froze 10 lakh linked accounts.

These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring safe, secure, and trustworthy digital communication services for Indian consumers.

Development Milestones in the North East

Scindia highlighted the transformative growth in India’s North Eastern region over the past year, noting that FY 2024-25 witnessed the highest-ever expenditure of ₹3,447.71 crore, a 74% increase over the previous year. Nearly 97% of projects were inspected, and 91% were operationalized through the Poorvottar Vikas Setu digital portal.

He also emphasized the success of the Rising North East Investors Summit 2025, which attracted eight chief ministers and over 100 ambassadors, resulting in investment commitments totaling ₹4.48 lakh crore.

Infrastructure development has been particularly notable:

  • The North East now has 17 operational airports, up from nine in 2014.
  • All states in the region are expected to be rail-connected by 2029.

“The Northeast today represents the spirit of a new India—empowered, connected, and future-ready. From a frontier, it has become a front-runner,” Scindia said, highlighting the region’s growing economic and strategic significance.

Event Attendance and Government Presence

The press conference was attended by Ministers of State Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani and Sukanta Majumdar, as well as senior officials and secretaries from the Department of Telecommunications and the Department of Posts. The gathering underlined the government’s emphasis on integrated development, combining postal modernization, telecom advancements, and regional growth initiatives.

Conclusion

The launch of 24-hour and 48-hour Speed Post services marks a significant step in modernizing India’s postal system, making it more competitive with private courier services while enhancing reliability and accountability. Combined with new postal products, advances in telecom technology, and strengthened digital safety mechanisms, the initiatives reflect the government’s broader vision of a digitally connected, economically empowered, and globally competitive India.

With North Eastern development, investment attraction, and infrastructure expansion complementing postal and telecom improvements, the government seeks to ensure that every region of India, including remote areas, benefits from modern services, connectivity, and growth opportunities.

The developments signal a future-ready approach, positioning India as a global player in logistics, technology, and regional development, while also demonstrating a strong commitment to citizen-centric services and digital governance.
