Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, on Tuesday denounced the police blockade at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, describing it as a dangerous intrusion into the party’s internal affairs.
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Mohammed warned that the opposition party would not tolerate any actions aimed at weakening its institutions or disrupting its internal processes.
“As Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, I must state clearly: enough is enough,” he said. “The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) does not belong to any individual; it belongs to Nigerians.”
The statement came just hours after chaos erupted at the PDP national headquarters, where police officers fired teargas to disperse supporters amid escalating tensions over the party’s leadership crisis.
Clashes Erupt as Rival Factions Storm Secretariat
Trouble broke out at Wadata Plaza when Governor Seyi Makinde, Governor Bala Mohammed, and the Turaki-led executive arrived for a meeting. Supporters loyal to Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s faction attempted to block their entry, leading to confrontations that quickly drew in security operatives.
Governor Makinde condemned the disorder and called for immediate steps to restore normalcy within the party.
Amid the clashes, police fired teargas, sending party members, officials, and journalists running for safety.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike also arrived at the secretariat but remained inside his vehicle for over 30 minutes as the unrest intensified.
SaharaReporters learned that armed police and operational vans took up strategic positions early Tuesday after intelligence suggested possible clashes between loyalists of Wike and those aligned with Makinde.
The confrontation escalated when Makinde and Mohammed’s faction arrived for a scheduled meeting, only to meet another group—aligned with Wike—attempting to access the same hall for a separate NEC and Board of Trustees meeting convened by disputed National Secretary, Senator Anyanwu.
Eyewitnesses reported heated altercations between both camps before police officers resorted to teargas to disperse the crowd.
Competing Meetings Heighten Tensions
A faction of the PDP loyal to Wike had earlier announced emergency NEC and Board of Trustees meetings for Tuesday, November 18, 2025, according to a notice issued by Anyanwu and shared by the FCT Minister’s media aide, Lere Olayinka.
In response, Makinde’s bloc also scheduled its own meeting for the same venue and date, raising fears of a direct confrontation—which ultimately materialised.
Bala Mohammed: PDP Governors Will Not Allow the Party to Be Dismantled
In his statement, Governor Mohammed described the police presence at the secretariat as “troubling,” warning that PDP governors would not allow the party’s foundation to be undermined.
“Speaking in Abuja regarding the troubling police blockade of our party’s national secretariat, I reaffirm that the PDP Governors’ Forum will not stand by and watch the party be dismantled by those who neither understand its founding principles nor respect its future,” he said.
He added that the forum is committed to working closely with the newly constituted National Working Committee (NWC) to defend the party’s structures and uphold its democratic values.
“We are fully committed to working with the newly constituted NWC to safeguard our national secretariat, uphold internal democracy, and protect the integrity of our party,” he said. “We shall do so with unity, strategic coordination, and an unshakable commitment to the rule of law.”
Mohammed insisted the PDP would not succumb to intimidation, recalling the party’s history of surviving political storms.
“Let me be clear: the PDP will not be cowed, harassed, or silenced. We have weathered greater storms and emerged stronger. This moment will be no different,” he said.
Governor Accuses Presidency of Enabling PDP Destabilisation
The Bauchi governor also accused the President Bola Tinubu-led administration of empowering individuals seeking to destabilise the PDP by granting them access to state power for personal political battles.
“It is a dangerous precedent to empower individuals who lack both character and commitment to democratic values, individuals who misuse state power to settle internal political disputes,” he warned.
“Such actions undermine the very institutions that sustain our democracy.”
Ruling Comes Amid Deepening PDP Crisis
The crisis within the PDP intensified just days after the party expelled FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, and former National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu during its national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.
