Kolkata: In a dramatic escalation of political tensions, Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Kalyan Banerjee has lodged a formal complaint against West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, accusing him of jeopardizing India’s sovereignty and integrity, and allegedly making statements that promote subversive and separatist sentiments.
The complaint, filed on Wednesday at Hare Street Police Station, invokes several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) — sections relating to criminal conspiracy (Section 61), endangering the country’s unity (Section 152), provoking riots (Section 192), promoting enmity (Section 196), and public mischief (Section 353). Banerjee’s filing specifically refers to remarks made by Governor Bose during press conferences in July 2024, October 2025, and November 2025, which the MP claims amount to instigating anti-state activities.
This move comes just a day after the Raj Bhavan in Kolkata filed its own complaint against Banerjee. The Raj Bhavan accused him of making serious allegations: Banerjee had publicly asserted that the Governor’s residence was being used as a base to supply arms and explosives to criminals, specifically targeting TMC workers.
In response to Banerjee’s claims, Raj Bhavan issued a strongly-worded statement demanding an apology, stating that if the allegations were baseless, the MP should retract them. The statement also questioned how security protocols — especially given that the Governor is protected under Z+ security category — could have allowed weapons to be brought into the Raj Bhavan premises.
Following this, Governor Bose ordered a coordinated search operation involving state and central forces. According to the Raj Bhavan, the search was carried out jointly by the Kolkata Police, CRPF bomb squad, dog squads, and teams from the disaster management and civil defence departments. The Raj Bhavan was temporarily evacuated during the search, and a firefighting drill was conducted as part of the operation.
As of Wednesday evening, no public comment had come from Raj Bhavan in reaction to Banerjee’s counter-complaint.
This unfolding confrontation marks yet another chapter in the fraught dynamics between the TMC-led state government and the Governor’s office, with both sides now exchanging legal battles amid claims of political overreach and threat to public order.
