Maithili Thakur Celebrates First-Time MLA Win with Folk Song Performance

Bihar, Nov 19, 2025 – Folk singer-turned-politician Maithili Thakur, who recently won the Alinagar assembly seat on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket, celebrated her maiden electoral victory in a uniquely musical way. On Tuesday, ahead of the formation of Bihar’s new government, the 25-year-old MLA delighted the media and onlookers by singing a folk song, highlighting both her joy and cultural roots.

When reporters requested her to sing a few lines during an interaction, Thakur obliged, performing with her characteristic grace. Her song received applause from those present, marking a celebratory yet reflective moment as she embarked on her political journey.

“This is a very new experience for me because I am the youngest member of the Vidhan Sabha. I am receiving a lot of love from the people,” Thakur said, reflecting on her transition from music to public service. She further acknowledged the responsibilities her position entails, stating, “While there is happiness, the bigger feeling is that of the responsibility of working every day without any break. The commitment to serving the nation has doubled.”

Speaking on the upcoming NDA government formation in Bihar, Thakur stated, “I will follow the order of the party. I am very happy that I got this opportunity. There is a lot of work to be done after the oath-taking ceremony.” Her remarks reflect both her enthusiasm and readiness to shoulder the responsibilities that come with political office.

Following her electoral success, Thakur received unexpected praise from across party lines. Congress MP Karti P. Chidambaram took to X to laud her musical talent, cautioning that the demands of political office should not stifle her passion. In his post, he wrote, “Hope your talent & passion for music is not curbed & stifled by the rigours & demands of being a constituency MLA. @maithilithakur. Continue to nurture your passion.”

The MP also shared Thakur’s 2020 rendition of the Tamil song Kannana Kanney from the 2018 film Viswasam, starring Ajith Kumar. The gesture underscores her widespread recognition as both an artist and now a political figure.
