A tragic road accident along the Awka–Onitsha Expressway in Anambra State has left one person dead and another seriously injured.
The collision occurred on Wednesday at Igbariam Junction and involved a red Coca-Cola trailer (without a registration number) and an ash-colored bus belonging to the Anambra State Amalgamated Traders Association (ASMATA).
Eyewitnesses said the ASMATA bus had stopped to fix a faulty tyre but was improperly parked. “Because of the wrong parking, the trailer, while attempting to maneuver, caught the bus with one of its tyres and dragged it into a gutter, injuring the occupants,” one witness explained.
Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, confirmed that the crash resulted from loss of control by the trailer driver. She said four males were involved, with one injured and one confirmed dead.
FRSC personnel rescued the trapped occupants and cleared the road using a crane. The injured victim was taken to Chira Hospital, Awkuzu, while the deceased was deposited at Jerusalem Hospital, Nteje.
Commander Asekhauno expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery, urging motorists to drive cautiously, maintain safe speeds, and avoid reckless maneuvers. “Our priority is to save lives and restore traffic flow quickly. We will continue enforcing traffic laws and educating the public to prevent similar incidents,” she added.
