Why We Haven’t Yet Prosecuted Terrorism Financiers – Nigerian Government

The Federal Government of Nigeria has explained why individuals suspected of financing terrorism have not yet been prosecuted, emphasizing that such cases require careful and extensive investigations.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated on Friday during an interview on Channels Television that the matter is more complex than simply having a list of suspects and taking them to court.

“It is not a question of having the list or not having the list; it is not as simplistic as that. Investigations have to be conducted. You don’t say, ‘because pronouncements have been made, let me take you to court directly.’ There must be sufficient investigation carried out,” Idris explained.

His remarks come amid growing public concerns over alleged government complicity and the worsening security situation in parts of the country, particularly in the North, where Boko Haram, ISWAP, and bandit groups operate.

Successive administrations, including that of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, had reportedly identified some suspected financiers, raising expectations for prosecution. The current government under President Bola Tinubu is said to be working assiduously to address terrorism and other security threats, according to Idris.
