Community leaders in Bissaula ward, Kurmi Local Government Area, Taraba State, have raised the alarm over a fresh outbreak of violence, urging the state government to deploy security personnel to prevent further attacks.
Led by former council chairman Stephen Agya and Alhaji Idi Ismail, the leaders expressed concern over a major setback to ongoing peace efforts between the Ichen and Ndaka-Chamba ethnic groups.
The crisis, which began on December 6, 2021, has repeatedly destabilized the community, leaving residents dead and property destroyed. Government-led peace initiatives, including a commission of inquiry under former Governor Dahiru Ishaku and a peace accord convened last year by Governor Agbu Kefas, had restored some calm.
However, on November 19, 2025, suspected Ndaka-Chamba militia launched a nighttime attack, targeting former youth leader and Taraba Marshal commander Baba U. Gambo, who sustained multiple gunshot injuries and is receiving medical treatment. Another resident, Kefas Hassan Bui, escaped unharmed.
Community leaders warned that the fragile peace could collapse without urgent intervention and appealed to the state government for a permanent security presence. They also urged civic organizations and religious bodies to intensify peace awareness campaigns among local communities.
“We are ready to embrace peace. We call on all and sundry to do the same so that we can live together peacefully, as before,” the Ichen community reaffirmed.
