Counter-Insurgency Requires Patriotism, Says Senator Jimoh Ibrahim

Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, CFR, representing Ondo South, has emphasized that Nigeria’s fight against insurgency will remain limited unless citizens actively participate as stakeholders in national security efforts.

Speaking at the Senate Southwest Security Summit in Lagos, Ibrahim, who holds a PhD in Modern War Studies, highlighted that patriotism—demonstrated through trust, cooperation, and collective vigilance—is a more effective tool against terrorism than mere military action.

He stressed that the responsibility of combating insurgency cannot rest solely on the military, noting that communities play a pivotal role in determining whether terrorists gain sympathy or lose influence.

“Insurgents thrive on societal divisions. You cannot win a war when the people are not emotionally aligned with the mission of that war,” he said.

Ibrahim also underscored the importance of Civil-Military Operations, which help build credibility and legitimacy within affected communities. He warned that excessive force without public engagement can alienate civilians and provide insurgents with propaganda opportunities.

The senator cited global experience, noting that public trust often outweighs firepower in successful counter-terrorism efforts. He called on Nigerians to deepen their love for the country, stressing that unity is strategic, not symbolic, in the fight against internal and external threats.

Ibrahim further urged citizens to remain vigilant, share intelligence, and support security operations, emphasizing that insecurity grows where people detach themselves from national security.

He expressed optimism that Nigeria can overcome its current challenges if government, security agencies, and citizens collaborate fully, concluding:
“We shall overcome, but only if we act together and put the country first.”

The senator also thanked the Senate for backing his motion to hold a National Security Summit across the six geo-political zones and for establishing an ad hoc committee to implement the initiative.
