NAICOM Directs Insurance Customers to Link NIN to Policies

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has issued a directive requiring all insurance customers in Nigeria to link their National Identification Number (NIN) to their policies by April 30, 2026. Corporate clients are also required to provide Certificate of Incorporation (CAC) documents before this deadline.

The directive, issued under circular NAICOM/TD/MCCB/CIR/73/2025, applies to all insurance companies and brokers. It aims to strengthen transparency in the industry and ensure compliance with Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations.

According to NAICOM, no insurance policy—individual or corporate—should be issued without collecting the required documents. For group life insurance policies, insurers and brokers must obtain a list of employees, including names, dates of birth, and NINs, before the policy begins.

For policies already in force but missing NIN or CAC documents, insurers are required to engage with policyholders and update the records by the April 30, 2026 deadline.

NAICOM has instructed all insurers to collaborate with brokers and agents to raise awareness about this requirement. Non-compliance, including failure to obtain NIN or CAC documents, will attract regulatory sanctions.

This new circular replaces the previous directive NAICOM/TD/MCCB/CIR/58/2025, reinforcing the commission’s commitment to improving compliance and accountability within the Nigerian insurance sector.
