French football star Paul Pogba made an emotional return to competitive football on Saturday, stepping onto the pitch for Monaco in his first game in more than two years following a doping ban. The former Juventus and Manchester United midfielder joined Monaco on a free transfer in June 2025 and has been eagerly awaiting a chance to play after a long hiatus.
Pogba’s Return After Doping Ban
Pogba’s absence from football began in September 2023, culminating in a four-year ban in February 2024 after testing positive for the banned substance DHEA, known to increase testosterone levels. After an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the suspension was reduced to 18 months, allowing him to return this season.
Despite being sidelined by a right ankle injury last month, Pogba made his much-anticipated debut in the 85th minute of Monaco’s 4-1 defeat to Rennes at Roazhon Park, earning a standing ovation from the crowd.
“Seeing the crowd rise and applaud, I never imagined that would happen,” Pogba said. “I’m relieved to be playing football again, the thing I love most in the world. But there’s still work to do to get back to full fitness and be able to play 90 minutes.”
Pogba’s Career and International Experience
At 32 years old, Pogba has already enjoyed a decorated career, making 91 appearances for France and playing a starring role in France’s 2018 FIFA World Cup victory. Injuries—including knee and hamstring problems, as well as surgery—prevented him from representing France at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Pogba emphasized his determination to regain full match fitness and return to the national team, saying:
“If I don’t perform well at Monaco, I can forget about the French national team. I believe in myself and in my qualities, and since I knew I had done nothing wrong and it was not my fault, I never lost hope.”
Monaco’s Ambitions and Pogba’s Role
Monaco, competing in Ligue 1, will rely on Pogba’s experience and leadership to boost their midfield creativity and stability. His return marks a significant moment for the club as they aim to strengthen their title ambitions this season.
Fans and football analysts alike have praised Pogba’s resilience and mental strength, highlighting his ability to return to top-flight football after a prolonged absence. While Monaco lost the match against Rennes, Pogba’s reappearance is seen as a major boost for the team’s morale and a key step in his journey back to full competitive form.
