Celtic Set to Appoint Wilfried Nancy as New Manager

Celtic close to finalizing deal with MLS star coach Wilfried Nancy

Celtic Football Club is reportedly on the verge of appointing Wilfried Nancy, the successful Major League Soccer (MLS) head coach, as their new manager. The talks between the Scottish champions and the Columbus Crew boss have reportedly reached an advanced stage, signaling a potential new era at Parkhead.

Celtic’s Managerial Search

Celtic have been in search of a permanent manager since Brendan Rodgers resigned last month. In the interim, Martin O’Neill, assisted by Shaun Maloney, has overseen the team for the past five games.

Under O’Neill’s temporary stewardship, Celtic have recorded an impressive four wins in domestic fixtures but were defeated by Midtjylland in the Europa League. The club currently sits four points behind Heart of Midlothian at the top of the Scottish Premiership, although Celtic hold a game in hand, keeping their title hopes alive.

Looking ahead, Celtic will travel to face Feyenoord in their fifth Europa League fixture this Thursday. Domestically, they are set to defend their Premier Sports Cup title in next month’s final against St Mirren, who lost 1-0 to O’Neill’s side in their most recent league encounter.

Club Tensions and Fan Relations

Nancy’s anticipated arrival comes at a delicate time for Celtic. Last week, the club’s annual meeting was cut short after shareholder unrest, sparked by comments from Ross Desmond, son of major shareholder Dermot Desmond, was met with jeers. Supporters also chanted for changes in the club’s leadership, highlighting ongoing tensions between the board and fans.

Following the recent victory over St Mirren, O’Neill emphasized the need for unity within the club. “Celtic need some sort of unification,” he stated, reflecting the mood among supporters calling for a renewed sense of direction at Parkhead.

Who is Wilfried Nancy?

Wilfried Nancy began his football career in France, including playing spells with Toulon, before moving into coaching in Canada. His rise to prominence began in 2021 when he succeeded Thierry Henry as head coach of Montreal Impact, guiding the team to the Canadian Championship that same year.

In 2022, Nancy joined Columbus Crew, leading them to the MLS Cup in 2023 and the Leagues Cup title last year, a tournament contested between top clubs from the United States and Mexico. He was also named MLS Coach of the Year during that period.

However, his 2025 campaign saw a dip in form, with Columbus finishing seventh in the Eastern Conference and 12th overall. Nancy has overseen 215 games in North America, and a move to Celtic would mark his first managerial role in European football.

What Nancy Brings to Celtic

Nancy is known for his attacking style, tactical flexibility, and ability to develop young talent. Celtic fans will hope that he can replicate his MLS success in Europe, rejuvenating the club’s domestic and continental ambitions. His appointment could also signal a strategic shift for the club, blending European traditions with innovative coaching methods from North America.

With the Celtic board reportedly finalizing terms, Nancy’s arrival could happen imminently, offering hope to fans eager for stability, success, and unity at Parkhead.
