Mick Schumacher switches from Formula 1 and endurance racing to IndyCar for the 2026 season
Former Formula 1 driver Mick Schumacher has confirmed that he will join the 2026 IndyCar Series with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL). The 26-year-old German, son of seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher, officially departs his role as Mercedes reserve driver, a position he held after being dropped by Haas in 2022 following 43 Grand Prix starts.
Transition from F1 to IndyCar
After leaving Formula 1, Schumacher explored opportunities for a return to the F1 grid but was not signed by Sauber/Audi or Alpine for the 2025 season. Instead, he competed in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine in 2024 and 2025, earning three podium finishes in 16 starts.
Speaking about his move, Schumacher said:
“Having both an F1 and an endurance background, and having competed in various racing series over the years, I have insights and knowledge that I am sure will contribute to a great partnership.”
The switch to IndyCar marks a major new chapter in his career, giving Schumacher the chance to showcase his skills on American circuits and road courses, while adapting to the competitive oval racing format unique to the series.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Welcomes Schumacher
Bobby Rahal, co-owner of RLL, praised Schumacher’s potential and professionalism:
“His test with us on the IMS road course was exceptional; he impressed every single team member. Everyone walked away from that event determined to do what we could to bring Mick into our programme. We’re thrilled he’s chosen to join us, and we can’t wait to get to work.”
Schumacher will drive the number 47 Honda alongside teammates Graham Rahal and 2025 Rookie of the Year Louis Foster, forming a strong lineup for the upcoming season.
2026 IndyCar Season Preview
The 2026 IndyCar Series will feature 17 races, beginning with the Firestone Grand Prix in St. Petersburg, Florida, on 1 March. Fans are eager to see how Schumacher’s Formula 1 experience, coupled with his endurance racing background, will translate to the competitive IndyCar environment.
Schumacher’s move also reflects a growing trend of European drivers testing their skills in American open-wheel racing, potentially paving the way for a new generation of crossover talent between F1, endurance racing, and IndyCar.
