The Nigerian Presidency has confirmed that the Department of State Services (DSS) and the military directly engaged the bandits responsible for the abduction of 38 church worshippers in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area, Kwara State.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, revealed in an Arise Television interview on Monday that security agencies demanded the immediate release of the victims, and the kidnappers complied, aware of the consequences of defying government orders.
“After the incident, the DSS and the military were involved in the rescue efforts. They contacted the bandits to release those people unharmed, and by Sunday, the hostages were freed,” Onanuga said.
He explained that security agencies have methods for tracking armed groups but often exercise caution to avoid collateral damage, as abducted civilians are frequently used as human shields.
“The priority of the government was to secure the safe return of the abducted persons,” Onanuga added. “The first objective has been achieved. Further actions against the bandits will be handled by security agencies.”
All 38 worshippers were reportedly rescued alive. Authorities have not disclosed operational specifics or whether additional measures are being taken against the kidnappers.
The incident has renewed public concern over rising insecurity in Kwara South and neighbouring states, intensifying calls for stronger intelligence operations and community protection measures.
