Why Nigeria Must Take Bold Action Against Gender-Based Violence – NHRC

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged Nigeria to intensify efforts to tackle the widespread issue of gender-based violence (GBV).

Speaking at a press conference organized with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) to mark the 16 Days of Activism against GBV, NHRC Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, highlighted the importance of this year’s theme, “Equality: Reducing Inequality and Advancing Human Rights.” He described it as a call to action to reaffirm the nation’s commitment to safeguarding human rights.

Dr. Ojukwu stressed the need for collaboration among stakeholders, including the media, faith-based groups, human rights organizations, student unions, women’s associations, and security agencies, to develop new strategies to combat violence against women.

The campaign holds particular urgency in Nigeria, where GBV remains rampant. UN Women data reveals that nearly one in three women globally experience violence, with one in four adolescent girls in abusive relationships.

Ojukwu also noted that International Human Rights Day is a moment to evaluate progress in upholding the rights enshrined in Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution and international human rights agreements. He emphasized the importance of addressing existing gaps and challenges to ensure full rights realization.

To commemorate this year’s 16 Days of Activism, running from November 25 to December 10, 2024, the NHRC and its partners have planned various initiatives to amplify marginalized voices, promote accountability, and foster dialogue on advancing human rights and equality across the nation.
