First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Calls for Safer Digital Spaces for Women and Girls

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on government institutions, technology companies, civil society organisations, and citizens to take decisive, coordinated action to make the nation’s digital environment safer, more inclusive, and respectful for women and girls.

She made the appeal in her message commemorating the 2025 International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, observed globally on November 25.

This year’s theme, “UNiTE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls,” highlights the rising threats of online harassment, exploitation, cyberbullying, and gender-based hate.

Mrs. Tinubu expressed concern that digital platforms meant to promote learning, connection, and productivity have increasingly become spaces where women and girls encounter bullying, blackmail, stalking, and targeted misogyny. She described online abuse as a dangerous and often invisible extension of gender-based violence.

“Digital spaces should foster genuine human connection, facilitate learning, and promote productivity—not fear. I call on government institutions, especially the legislature and judiciary, technology companies, civil society, and every Nigerian to take bold action to make digital spaces safe, inclusive, and respectful for all,” she said.

The First Lady expressed solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence across the country, stating that any form of abuse—whether online or offline—is an attack on the dignity, safety, and potential of women and girls.

She urged for continued advocacy, stronger legal protections, and greater institutional accountability to curb both physical and digital forms of violence.

Mrs. Tinubu reaffirmed her commitment to championing the rights and well-being of Nigerian women and girls, calling for nationwide reflection and renewed determination to eliminate all forms of violence against women.
