Daiyaana Muhammad, model, nurse, educator, and fiancée of Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Dion Dawkins, is opening up exclusively to PEOPLE about what it takes to thrive as a WAG—wives and girlfriends of NFL players. Muhammad, who has built a diverse career spanning healthcare, teaching, modeling, and fitness, emphasizes the importance of balance, confidence, and self-care while navigating the unique demands of NFL life.
From Nursing to Modeling to NFL Life
Originally from Los Angeles, Muhammad began modeling at the age of 18, simultaneously cultivating a passion for nursing. After completing nursing school, she moved to Atlanta, where she worked on Emory University’s dialysis floor and in pediatric emergency care. Her career took a turn when she met Dion Dawkins, prompting her relocation to Buffalo, New York.
In Buffalo, Muhammad continued her healthcare work in the NICU while pursuing a master’s degree and teaching at Chamberlain University. Alongside her professional pursuits, she also reintegrated into the modeling world and worked as a Pilates instructor.
“Managing it all takes discipline and strategy,” Muhammad reveals. “You have to fill your cup up first and then you’re able to give your best to all the situations.”
Daily Life and Family Focus
For Muhammad, self-care is a central part of her routine. She begins her days meditating with her three children to “recenter” themselves, emphasizing that her approach allows her to excel both personally and professionally.
“I can go to Paris Fashion Week and still make it to my man’s game on Sunday. You know?” she says. Muhammad ensures her time with Dawkins is meaningful, giving him her undivided attention whenever they’re together.
The Realities of Being a WAG
Muhammad embraces the term WAG, acknowledging that it comes with responsibilities beyond the glamor often seen by the public. She describes the role as requiring strength, resilience, and the ability to manage multiple aspects of life simultaneously.
“We have to manage our fans, our community, other women, not being around our men for a lot of time… we have to manage our men’s mental health and then still have a strong face for our kids,” she explains.
Despite the public perception of WAGs as living a glamorous life, Muhammad insists that it requires a grounded sense of self. “You have to have your own confidence, your own sense of self. You have to be comfortable in your own skin,” she notes.
Unique Hobbies and Shared Adventures
Muhammad and Dawkins maintain a “different vibey” relationship, enjoying activities such as drift-car racing and skiing. She emphasizes that quality time, no matter how unusual the activity, is essential for nurturing their bond and maintaining a balanced family life.
Lessons for Her Children
Muhammad hopes her approach to life, self-care, and confidence will positively influence her children. “If you’re confident within yourself in this space and you know who you are, that will exude to your children as well,” she says.
Through a combination of self-awareness, intentional time management, and a strong support system, Daiyaana Muhammad exemplifies how to thrive as a modern WAG while maintaining a successful career and fulfilling personal life.
