Nagma Mohamed Mallick Appointed India’s Next Ambassador to Japan

Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Nagma Mohamed Mallick has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Japan, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). She is currently serving as India’s Ambassador to the Republic of Poland and will take up her new assignment shortly.

Ms Nagma Mohamed Mallick (IFS: 1991), presently our Ambassador to the Republic of Poland, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Japan,” the MEA announcement stated.

Career and Diplomatic Experience

1991-batch IFS officer, Mallick has had a distinguished diplomatic career spanning over three decades, representing India across multiple continents. She began her diplomatic journey in Paris, serving at the Embassy of India to Franceand the Indian Mission to UNESCO.

In New Delhi, she held several key positions within the Ministry of External Affairs and the Government of India, including:

  • Desk Officer in the West Europe Division of the MEA
  • Staff member in the Prime Minister’s Office under PM I.K. Gujral
  • The first woman Deputy Chief of Protocol (Ceremonial)

Her overseas assignments have been equally notable:

  • First Secretary in Nepal and Counsellor in Sri Lanka
  • Deputy Chief of Mission in Thailand (2010–2012)
  • Ambassador to Tunisia (2012–2015)
  • High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam (2015–2018)

Back in India, she served in pivotal roles within MEA:

  • Deputy Spokesperson
  • Director of the Eurasia Division, handling India’s relations with Russia and CIS countries
  • Head of the Policy Planning Division
  • Additional Secretary (Africa), overseeing India’s engagement with Eastern and Southern African nations

Her extensive experience reflects a blend of multilateral, bilateral, and policy-oriented diplomacy, making her one of India’s most seasoned foreign service officers.

Early Life and Personal Background

Nagma Mallick holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and a Master’s degree in Sociology. She is married and has two children. She is multilingual, speaking English, French, Hindi, Urdu, and Malayalam, and has a keen interest in Indian classical dance and music, English literature, fitness, and nutrition.

Mallick’s appointment to Japan comes at a crucial time in India-Japan relations, underlining her diplomatic acumen and long-standing expertise in managing India’s bilateral and multilateral engagements.
