United States President Donald Trump has confirmed that National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom has died from injuries sustained in a shooting near the White House, while her fellow serviceman Andrew Wolfe remains in critical condition. The double shooting occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Washington, DC, sending shockwaves across the US military community.
Details of the Attack Near the White House
Authorities report that the two West Virginia National Guard members were ambushed while on patrol. Beckstrom, 20, was described by Trump as a “highly respected, young, magnificent person,” highlighting her service and dedication. Wolfe, 24, continues to fight for his life following the attack.
The suspect, identified as Rahmanaullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, has been linked to the shootings. US officials noted that Lakanwal previously worked with the CIA in Afghanistan before moving to the United States in 2021, shortly after the withdrawal of Western forces.
Legal Actions and Investigations
The US Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, stated that first-degree murder charges would be pursued against Lakanwal if either or both victims do not survive the attack.
“We are praying that they survive and that the highest charge will not have to be murder in the first degree,” Pirro said. “But make no mistake, if they do not, that will certainly be the charge.”
In response to the incident, the Trump administration announced a major review of green card applications from 19 countries, including Afghanistan, to assess immigration and vetting processes. Joseph Edlow, Director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services, said a “full scale, rigorous re-examination” of all green cards for individuals from these countries is underway.
Background on the Victims
Sarah Beckstrom joined the West Virginia National Guard two years ago after graduating high school. She was ambushed alongside Andrew Wolfe during a routine patrol, reflecting the unpredictable risks faced by National Guard personnel stationed in the nation’s capital.
