England manager Sarina Wiegman has revealed she wanted Millie Bright to feature in this month’s friendlies before the Chelsea captain announced her retirement from international football.
Bright, 32, retired on Monday after earning 88 caps and captaining England to the 2023 Women’s World Cup final. Wiegman praised her leadership and influence, saying:
“She’s still a very good player so I want her in the squad but I totally respect and understand the decision. She’s had a massive influence on and off the pitch.”
This is Wiegman’s first squad since England won Euro 2025 in July. Several key players are absent due to injury, including captain Leah Williamson (knee), forward Lauren James (ankle), and forward Lauren Hemp (ankle).
Lucy Bronze returns after recovering from a fractured tibia, while defenders Niamh Charles, Katie Reid, and Taylor Hinds earn squad places. Midfielders Grace Clinton and Lucia Kendall also receive call-ups, with Kendall making her first senior appearance.
England face Brazil at Etihad Stadium on Saturday, 25 October, followed by a match against Australia at Pride Park on Tuesday, 28 October.
England Squad Highlights:
