Centre Considering New Design for India-Bangladesh Border Fencing: BSF Tripura IG

Agartala, Nov 30, 2025: The Border Security Force (BSF) Tripura Frontier Inspector General, Aloke Kumar Chakraborty, said on Sunday that a proposal for a new design of barbed wire fencing along the India-Bangladesh border is under consideration by the Centre.

Key Points:

  • Border Details: India shares a 4,096 km international border with Bangladesh, with Tripura accounting for 856 km.
  • Reason for New Fencing:
    • Much of the existing barbed wire fencing has outlived its lifespan.
    • Weather conditions in Tripura have further deteriorated the fencing.
    • The BSF is planning to replace old fencing with improved designs to strengthen border management.
  • Centre Involvement: The Ministry of Home Affairs is actively considering the proposal. The BSF hopes that the installation of new fencing will begin shortly.
  • Border Situation: According to IG Chakraborty, the situation along the border is “normal,” and the relationship with the Bangladesh Border Guard remains cordial and cooperative.
  • Patrolling and Security Measures:
    • Scheduled joint patrolling is conducted regularly.
    • Special patrols, border contact, and casualty contact are also maintained.
    • higher-level meeting between the two forces is awaited.
  • Cattle Smuggling:
    • The BSF has strengthened zero-line patrolling and border haats to address smuggling.
    • Recovered cattle heads are handed over to the Dhyan Foundation, or to local police authorities if space runs out.

The new fencing proposal aims to enhance border security, prevent smuggling, and strengthen overall management along the India-Bangladesh boundary.
